Why are generic medicines so cheap?

Unlike generic drugs, a large part of the costs incurred by original manufacturers of brand name drugs are for research and development and advertising. The expense of obtaining FDA approval alone in the U.S. is enormous. Manufacturers of generic drugs do not have to absorb or recover these costs. Consequently, significant cost savings can be passed along to you.

Generic Name: Terazosin
Brand Names: Hytrin

Hytrin (Terazosin) is used for:

Treating high blood pressure and treating signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Hytrin (Terazosin) is an alpha-blocker. It works by relaxing muscles in the blood vessels, resulting in lowering of blood pressure. In BPH, alpha-blockers work by relaxing muscles around the urethra (tube that drains urine from the bladder), which improves urinary symptoms.

Do NOT use Hytrin (Terazosin) if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Hytrin (Terazosin) or to similar medicines (eg, prazosin)
  • you are currently taking a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (eg, sildenafil), a medicine used frequently for sexual dysfunction

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Hytrin (Terazosin) :

Some medical conditions may interact with Hytrin (Terazosin). Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have prostate cancer, angina pectoris, heart disease, kidney or liver problems, or any other medical condition

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Hytrin (Terazosin). Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, sildenafil) or verapamil because severe dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may occur

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Hytrin (Terazosin) may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Hytrin (Terazosin).

Important safety information:

  • Hytrin (Terazosin) may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Hytrin (Terazosin) with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.

  • Hytrin (Terazosin) may rarely cause a prolonged, painful erection. This could happen even when you are not having sex. If this is not treated right away, it could lead to permanent sexual problems such as impotence. Contact your doctor right away if this happens.
